About ZigBee™/IEEE 802.15.4

The ZigBee™ international wireless standard, promoted by the ZigBee™ Alliance, specifies the communication protocol amongst devices operating in ZigBee™-based wireless sensor networks. A typical ZigBee™ compliant wireless device has a protocol stack in it that enables communication by ZigBee™ protocol. A simplified version of the architecture of the ZigBee™ protocol stack is shown in Figure 1, which is formed of different layers, each stacked over another.

The behavior of the lower layers of MAC and PHY are specified by IEEE 802.15.4 specifications. The ZigBee™ specifications not only define the way in which the various layers communicate with each other but also the formats in which a given device in a ZigBee™ network communicates with another device in the network over the air. Each ZigBee™ device should have a protocol stack implementation that conforms to these over-the-air protocol specifications in order for it to be inter-operable with another ZigBee™ device. Such inter-operability is essential for a ZigBee™ device to be certified as a ZigBee™ standard compliant device.
